Inspired by a Cross-Country Cycling Journey, Help Clinic Canada Launches to Provide Canadians with Easily Accessible Online Therapy

VICTORIA, BC May 1, 2024 More than 1 in 3 of those Canadians who experience mood anxiety or disorder report having unmet, or only partially met mental health care needs. While fundraising for breast cancer on a cross-country ride, therapist Maureen Codispodi decided to create Help Clinic Canada, launching in time for Mental Health Awareness Month this May. Help Clinic Canada offers a solution that would help Canadians, regardless of their access to benefits or adequate financial resources.

It’s a struggle that Codispodi encountered face-to-face while on a cross-country bike trek raising money to combat breast cancer, and her encounters with complete strangers seeking an outlet inspired her to create Help Clinic Canada, a solution to help Canadians, regardless of their access to benefits or adequate financial resources.

“In small towns, people notice a stranger,” shares Codispodi. “Locals would hear why I was doing this ride and when I’d take rests at coffee shops, they would introduce themselves—many of them being men—and share their stories about how breast cancer affected the women in their lives and how in turn, that affected them. That’s when I realized that in remote communities, therapy often meant essentially talking to someone too close to home – there was just too high a likelihood you’d bump into your therapist at the grocery store. Having a stranger to turn to confide in was less risky. That inspired me to create something that would help solve the Canadian mental health crisis.”

Help Clinic Canada is on a mission to provide quality, accessible, comprehensive online therapy services to all Canadians. The company is breaking down barriers to mental health support and providing a safe client-centred practice tailored to the individual.

In recent years, online therapy service providers have come under fire for sharing personal data, being difficult to navigate with benefits, underpaying their counsellors, and even hiring unqualified practitioners, causing a breakdown in client trust. Help Clinic Canada stands for an ethical community of care, fairly and transparently compensating its practitioners. This fall the company will be launching its low-fee therapy options which will be provided by the team of clinicians and through partnerships with Masters of Social Work and Counselling student interns.
